This month we are having a special Ram Dass event — a fundraising benefit for the SEVA foundation.
The SEVA foundation is the brainchild of Larry Brilliant, a friend of Ram Dass and a fellow devotee of Neem Karoli Baba.
Dr. Larry Brilliant who is an epidemiologist who contributed to the eradication of smallpox started SEVA foundation to rid the world of preventable blindness.
SEVA has created a way for poor people to get eye surgery that can reverse a lifetime of blindness. They have successfully scaled this nonprofit so that a $50 donation can reverse and cure one person’s blindness. So your $50 contribution can restore sight to someone for the rest of their life. That could be the best, most important thing you did in 2017, for the price of one dinner for two at a decent-but-not-crazy-expensive restaurant.
We will be learning about Karma Yoga and Seva, selfless service as defined in the spiritual tradition that inspired both Ram Dass and Larry Brilliant. We will watch a video provided by the SEVA foundation on their incredible service. And we will discuss and share the wisdom of our thoughtful and kind community members on what we can do to make the world a better place, and how these efforts contribute to our own happiness. We will also conclude with some singing and chanting.
Ram Dass has spent a lifetime making the deep wisdom of Eastern Spirituality accessible to those in the west, and this workshop focuses on specific teachings and techniques Ram Dass has learned with regards to understanding happiness. From specific meditation techniques, kirtan singing and studying scriptural works, Ram Dass has explored the depths of Eastern thought from Buddhism to Hinduism to bring back these teachings.
This is a free 2.5 hour workshop as part of a series to be held every fourth Sunday evening (once a month). This workshop will be led by Miko Matsumura RYT-200, Ram Dass Ambassador for SF and the South Bay and recent attendee of the Ram Dass week long retreat on Maui.
