Mark Singleton has a Ph.D in Divinity from the University of Cambridge, and is Senior Long-Term Research Fellow at the American Institute of Indian Studies, based in Jodhpur, India. He has written extensively on yoga, notably the books Yoga in the Modern World, Contemporary Perspectives (the first ever collection of scholarship on modern yoga) and Yoga Body, the Origins of Modern Posture Practice, which Yoga Journal said “should be on the reading list of every serious student and teacher training program”, and which Judith Lasater said “should be required reading for every yoga teacher in the US today”. A new collection, Gurus of Modern Yoga, appeared with Oxford University Press in 2013. His current work, Roots of Yoga, is a collection of yoga practice texts from the Sanskrit traditions. He is a certified yoga teacher in the Iyengar and Satyananda traditions and has taught yoga around the world for the past thirteen years.
