About Timothy McCall

Timothy McCall, M.D. is a specialist in internal medicine, the medical editor of Yoga Journal and the author of the bestselling Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing (Bantam).  He is one of the co-editors of the just-released medical textbook on yoga therapy, The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Health Care (Handspring Publishing). He teaches Yoga As Medicine Seminars and Teacher Trainings in the U.S. and worldwide.

Dr. McCall is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in psychology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he also attended medical school. After completing his residency in primary care internal medicine, he practiced for more than 10 years in the Boston area before devoting himself full time to writing and research. His main focus since the year 2000 has been investigating the therapeutic aspects of yoga, as well as the scientific explanations of yoga’s effects. He became Yoga Journal’s medical editor in 2002.

He has traveled extensively, studying with many of the world’s leading yoga teachers and yoga therapists including BKS Iyengar and TKV Desikachar. His primary teachers have been Patricia Walden, Rod Stryker and Donald Moyer. He has practiced yoga and meditation from various traditions for over 20 years and Tantra for more than a decade. Since 2005, he has studied with a traditional Ayurvedic doctor, Chandukutty Vaidyar, and has spent more than a year at his clinic in Kerala, India.

Timothy’s articles have appeared in dozens of publications, both scientific and popular, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, The Los Angeles Times, and The International Journal of Yoga Therapy (where he serves on the Editorial Board). He has appeared repeatedly on national radio and television programs, given keynote lectures and workshops at numerous conferences including ones sponsored by Yoga Journal and The International Association of Yoga Therapists, and has lectured at the National Institutes of Health and the Smithsonian Institution.

Yoga As Medicine is a 5-day, 30-hour, hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves intensive workshop, with much of the time spent doing yoga therapy in small groups under Timothy’s supervision. Practice observing bodies, study breathing patterns, analyzing doshas (body-mind types as described in ancient Ayurvedic medicine), and tailoring personalized therapeutic yoga practices. Lectures, yoga practices, writing exercises and guided meditations complement the group case work. In addition, on Sunday, Timothy will demonstrate an in-depth yoga therapy evaluation of one of the workshop participants. For those unable to join us for the full 5-days, there are a limited numbers of spots available to attend the weekend-only portion of the training.

During case work, which begins Monday, and in detailed discussions of selected cases, we evaluate “patients” in five categories, using the acronym SNAPS: Structural, Nervous System and Breath, Ayurveda, Psychology and Spirituality. This holistic roadmap allows for a systematic assessment of function on all levels of body, mind and spirit. YAM uses the full palette of yogic tools including poses, breathing techniques, meditation and philosophy as well as dietary and lifestyle advice.

Past attendees have included healers, health care professionals, yoga students and teachers, as well as those seeking yoga therapy for such conditions as back pain, cancer, arthritis, heart problems, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety and depression. Familiarity with basic yoga concepts and practices is helpful, but not absolutely necessary.
