The Circle of Enlightenment – A Meditative Practice of Creativity

Tashi-mannox-portrait

Join Tashi Mannox, one of the foremost Tibetan calligraphy artists, for a day of exploration in the meditative approach to creativity. Experience the creation of ensō as well as sacred seed syllables of the Tibetan calligraphy tradition Tashi upholds.

Belonging to the Japanese Zen tradition of calligraphy, An ensō is simply a circle painted with one brushstroke, in a single breath of awareness. Considered to be a meditative gesture of that moment in time it is created, it is deeply symbolic on many levels, which expresses the totality of our pure true nature of mind.

Tashi will guide you through a meditation in action to create an ensō. With full attention and physical fluidity, any hesitation or desire to create perfection is challenged with one’s expectations and apprehensions. The mindful ritual of creating an Ensō naturally challenges the practitioner to be in an undistracted present state of nowness during the creative process, observing the grasping tendency of hesitation and anticipation – qualities one would observe and tame in meditation as well as during yoga.

It is taught that “perfection is in the imperfection” as there should be no attachment to the created Ensō, resulting beauty or ugly is inconsequential, but an honest recording of that moment in time, which nakedly reveals our pure state of mind.

This event is available to all – even those who strongly believe they have no artistic ability. The ensō’s straightforward simplicity is much simpler than learning the complexities of a foreign language such as Japanese or Tibetan.
