You may have seen “Mysore” on the class schedule and were curious about it. Maybe you have observed a Mysore class and were puzzled about what was happening, or you have been practicing yoga for a while, but are not comfortable joining a Led Primary class without understanding the fundamentals of the practice.
This 4-week course provides a step-by-step guide to learn Mysore Style Ashtanga Vinyasa (Ashtanga Yoga). “Mysore Style” refers to the traditional way Ashtanga Yoga is taught in Mysore, India. This type of practice encourages the practitioner to follow the rhythm of his/her breath. In addition to strengthening the practitioner’s individual practice, this style of yoga also helps students gain ownership and understanding of their personal journey with yoga.
The objective of the course is to instruct the students through the various aspects of Ashtanga Yoga, including posture, breathing, and dristhi, which create the basis for practice as a moving meditation. Students will start by learning the elements of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) forms A and B. These sequences are the foundation of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and establish the basic form and flow of the greater series of postures. Building on this foundation, students will be introduced to the standing, some seated, as well as the finishing postures. Yoga practitioners aim to create a conscious synchronization of breath and movement, to enter a meditative state while practicing Ashtanga Yoga. During each session, students will be led through the postures and then they will be asked to perform the postures on their own.
It is recommended that students join the Mysore and Led Ashtanga classes available. This introductory course includes 3 weeks of unlimited access to these Ashtanga classes at Breathe Together Yoga.
About Julie
Julie found yoga in 2010 when Breathe Together first opened. Her initial thought was that yoga would provide a “good stretch” to complement her marathon training. Very quickly, Julie found that yoga offered much more. Yoga armed her with the tools to navigate the stress of life in Silicon Valley. It also served as a path to deeper healing from the loss of her husband.
In 2012, Julie started her journey towards becoming a yoga teacher with a trip to India for a 100 hour collaborative training between BTY’s JOY of Yoga teacher training program and YogalifeInternational’s program. In the following year, she completed an additional 200 hours of training (Dynamic and Therapeutics) with BTY’s JOY of Yoga Teacher Training Program and immediately enrolled in the 500 hour TT program.
Around the same timeframe, she was confronted with unresolved issues surrounding her chronic back pain. She continued her studies, logging 500+ hours towards her certification, and used her practice to navigate self healing. The ashtanga yoga method, with the tristana (breath, posture, and gaze), gave Julie the ability to find some separation from the discomfort, helped her to transform, and to further her healing. Through her mysore practice she was able to meet her discomfort each day on the mat and saw that, like the shapes made in doing the asanas, the discomfort showed up differently each day as well.
With her yoga teacher training certification, Julie is able to share her passion for yoga with others. As a student first, Julie’s six-day-a-week practice informs and inspires her teaching. She is grateful for the practice, the healing it has brought her (physically and emotionally), and for the many teachers who have shown her the way.
In addition to yoga, her other activities include spending time with her sons, strength training, hiking/backpacking, running, and all things outdoors.
