The Five Colors of Tea

Gideon holding a brown, clay tea pot.

Tea in China is traditionally categorized into five categories based on the color of its liquor. In 2025 we will take a flavorful journey through these vibrant realms of enjoyment.

  • January will showcase red tea (hóngchá 紅茶), which is actually called “black” tea in European and American culture due to the color of its fully oxidized leaves.
  • In February, come sample a range of green teas, which are produced from quickly dried camellia leaves and form the center of Japanese tea culture.
  • White teas, which are also called “silver needle,” have a thick tea liquor and a heady floral scent, will be featured in March.
  • April will bring you to the higher echelons of tea connoisseurship with a range of delicate blue-green teas (qīngchá 青茶), also known as oolong tea. These teas require a more complex oxidation process during drying and have long been favored by the Chinese elite.
  • In May, you will venture into the heart of tea culture as you explore the world of rare dark teas (hēichá 黑茶) such as Pu-erh.
  • Finally, join us in June for a tea party showcasing all five colors of tea in one climactic session, with snacks!

In 2025 you will have the opportunity to cleanse your palate, calm your worries and brighten your spirit with us for one Sunday a month. Don’t miss it.
