Yin Yoga Immersion

Yoga teacher, Joanne Varni, is smiling while seated outdoors, in front of a tree and green foliage.

During this 15-hour intensive, you will learn the benefits and basic information for teaching yin yoga, including sequencing and modifications, breath work, hands on adjustments, language and instruction, the history of yin yoga, and using props effectively.

Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, fascia, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice. All of the great systems of the body—the circulatory, the nervous system, the muscular-skeletal system, the digestive tract, and the various organs—are ensheathed in connective tissue.

Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga typically targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

While initially this style of yoga can seem quite boring, passive, or soft, yin practice can be quite challenging due to the long duration of the poses. We can remain in the postures anywhere from one to twenty minutes. One of the intentions of yin yoga is to promote the physical and energetic health of the connective tissue around the joints. To do this we put gentle physical stress on this tissue by controlled stretching. Props can be used depending on one’s body type.

The weekend will consist of lectures on the causes and effects of stress, anxiety, and trauma to our emotional, energetic, mental, and physical bodies. We will take a closer look at the nervous system and the causes of deregulation. You will learn a series of restorative asanas and how to use restorative props including bolsters, blocks, straps, walls, and sandbags. You will learn the importance of language and how to create and maintain a healing environment.

Supplemental material to complement this immersion including videos and a manual is included.
