1,000-Hour JOY CERTIFICATION

Overview

While yoga was historically a relatively solitary pursuit, it is now woven into the fabric of contemporary culture. The landscape of yoga and mind-body practices continues to evolve as the world faces a plethora of challenges. There is the need for courses, programs, and trainings that integrate a variety of mind-body, evidence-based practices into peoples’ daily lives so that we can all contribute to creating a culture of well-being.

In our JOY 200-hour level, students are provided core competencies to be safe and effective yoga instructors. In the 300-hour teacher training, JOY students become teachers through learning how to weave their unique understanding of the practice of yoga into dynamic and transformational classes and workshops, culminating 500 hours of training. The JOY 1,000-hour is for those who want to train in “engaged practice,” a non-secular and evidence-based application of yoga and mind-body practices, philosophy, and ethical guidelines that can positively affect every aspect of our lives; environmentally, economically, politically, socially, and of course, personally.

Breathe Together Yoga, the house under which JOY of Yoga exists, is known for its commitment to a variety of expressions of yoga and mind-body practices, based on the understanding that we are both part of the great web of creation, and each diverse ecosystems in and of ourselves. As we learn to take care of ourselves in ways that are unique to each of us, the greater contribution we can make to others. In fact, within the context of the practice, we can recognize ourselves in the other. It is this recognition that inspires our desire to be useful to our world. We recognize that yoga is not mat-centered, but exists at the center of every aspect of our lives. We feel motivated to support our students and clients in living life itself as a practice, in exploring their potential, in being useful to the world around them, and in having the refuge of daily practice in which to return.

Every teacher has a unique lens through which they view the practice. Each one of us has so much potential. The JOY 1000-hour program supports you to create programs, trainings, and course content of your own that utilizes the vast landscape of mind-body practices to benefit others in your own unique way. While this might mean being a full-time yoga teacher, it can also mean integrating your understanding of the practice into an already existing career.

In the language of yoga, this program is about living your dharma.

“Engaged practice” in the context of yoga, is the intention to non-violently apply the values and teachings of yoga to the world’s contemporary challenges, motivated by concern for others’ welfare, and as an expression of one’s own mind-body and breath-based practice. The JOY 1000-hour program focuses on how to make a meaningful contribution as an educator and a leader, whatever our individual circumstances may be and wherever our interests may lie.

Because modern yoga has focused extensively on yoga-asana, JOY 1000 requires 100 hours of evidence-based Meditation and Awareness education. To support a life of practice, this program requires training in self-care, cleansing, and nutrition practices of Ayurveda, the Yoga of Communication, Mindful Justice, Yoga and Inclusivity, Trauma-Informed Yoga, and Practicing and Living Sustainably.
