Deep Dive 2: Self Massage and Movement – Hands to Heart

Alyssa Prettyman3

As one of the hottest growing partners to a seasoned yoga practice, functional movement and self-massage are now being incorporated across drop-in yoga classes, crossfit boxes, and physical therapy sessions. This deep dive looks at our foundation and the structural/kinetic chains that run from the periphery of the hands, across the shoulders, to the focal point in our mid-thoracic spine and the upper-back region.

This session is designed to reinforce our understanding of anatomy and how our body is designed to move, and then explore self-massage and modern movement techniques that can help us feel and function better. Learn not just how to move and massage, but how to strategically design a practice sequence with a particular goal in mind to bring the body into a better state of balance.

This session can provide tremendous insight and relief for:

  • Positions: Those who spend a lot of time sitting at a computer/driving (anyone with a day job, professional drivers/truckers, travelers, you name it :). Those who spend a lot of time making chronic movements with their hands/rounded forwards in their upper back (hair stylists and spa workers, cooks/chefs).
  • Activities: Those who take on exercise regimens that challenge the shoulder and t-spine mobility: yoga practitioners, golfers, tennis players, baseball players, and more!
  • Pain / Disfunction: Those with hand/wrist and forearm pain, rotator cuff or shoulder impingement issues, upper back pain, breathing issues, neck issues, and even jaw clenching/TMJ (as that issue relates to the mechanical environment that the thoracic spine lives in).

This course is eligible for 15 hours credits toward the JOY of Yoga 300 Hour Teacher Training.
