Mariko Dugay

Born and raised in Japan, I was always fascinated by the art of the human body and movements. One day, I stepped on a yoga mat for the first time at Kripalu Yoga Center, when I was five-months pregnant with my son, and learned the power of practicing yoga and mindfulness. I am passionate about empowering my students through yoga, to meet where they are and discover (or rediscover) their beauty inside and out by creating a safe and non-judgmental space.

Meditation & Mindfulness

日本語でのヨガ (Yoga in Japanese)

I love to take my classes outdoors at parks, hills, forests, and beaches – to connect and  breathe nature, sun, and sky.

Off of my yoga mat, I enjoy being immersed in nature, dancing, hanging out with my calico cat, and sipping a nice cup of tea.

What have you learned through your practice?

I have learned not to push myself too hard to fit my body into a pose. Yoga taught me to feel inside instead of worrying about how I look outside.

How do you ground yourself off the mat?

I ground myself by imagining I have a big and strong root growing out of my feet/bottom spine, deep into the earth, and I send my breath there.

I teach the same in my class.

One thing your classes always have? One thing your classes will never have?

I remind my students to be curious about what is happening with their body/mind/breath instead of being judgemental. I would never bring “competitiveness” in the class, at least not intentionally, unless it’s for a game for fun or something.
