No Loss for Words: Language Development for Yoga Teachers

Noell_Headshot

Have you ever participated in a yoga class that completely transformed some element of your practice? Perhaps you were so deeply moved by something in the class that you left feeling forever changed, or a pose that once eluded you suddenly became possible.

Conversely, maybe you have participated in a yoga class and left questioning whether the practice was something you wanted to continue? Perhaps you felt disempowered in some way; judged or inadequate.

Likely the potency of your experience had something to do with words.

As yoga teachers and movement professionals, the words that we speak carry weight. We use language for many purposes; to orient bodies in space, suggest a variation of a pose, generate strong brain-body connections, and to create a sense of acceptance and community. The words we speak can be an invitation to bring students deeper into their practice or can leave students feeling alienated. Words matter.

Join Noell Clark for this 15-hour training on language development for yoga teachers and movement educators. This course will cover:

  • types of cueing – internal, external, verbal, and proprioceptive
  • deconstructing fear-based and hierarchical instruction
  • cultivating inclusive and invitational language
  • using creative imagery in your teaching
  • diversifying your technical language
  • speaking to bodies in motion

This course is a part of the JOY of Yoga 300-Hour Teacher Training Core Curriculum beginning January of every year, and also open to the public, with eligibility for 15 CEUs (Continuing Education Units). If you are interested in pursuing a 300-hour certification, you can apply and register at any time and, once accepted, begin taking Electives, even before completing the Core Curriculum.
