One Thousand Cranes: Collective Peace Prayer

OrigamiCrane.Izumi

Cranes are also believed to bring happiness and good luck. They are a symbol of longevity and are poetically said to live for 1,000* years.

A collection of 1,000 cranes symbolized world peace in honor of Sadako Sasaki, a 12-year old girl in Hiroshima, Japan who developed leukemia, most likely as a result of the radiation exposure from the deployment of the atomic bomb in World War II. It was her wish to cure her leukemia so she began making 1,000 origami cranes, following a Japanese legend that anyone who created 1,000 paper cranes would have their wish granted. After Sadako died, her friends and others continued to pray for world peace.

Join us and learn how to make origami cranes. As a community we’ll be making 1,000 cranes as an offering for world peace and for those who are suffering.  On September 23rd, we will thread all cranes together.

*The number “1,000” signifies a lot rather than a literal number
